Albariño is as refreshing and lively as the cool, green, windswept corner of Spain where it’s produced. Add an attractive price, and it’s little wonder that this white wine is one of the country’s most popular.
Some wines have a clear connection to a place. Their taste, their smell, even their appearance all seem to echo their region of origin. Albariño, the famous Spanish white made from a grape of the same name, is one such wine. Grown by the sea in the cool, green, windswept northwestern corner of Spain, Albariño is correspondingly cool, green and even a bit stony, aka minerally, too.
These qualities have made Albariño one of Spain’s most popular wines, as has its reasonable price tag. You can find a good bottle for around $20, and often much less. Lively and bright, Albariño is easy to drink. “This wine is like water—in a good way,” observed my friend Julie when I poured her a taste of an Albariño recently.
