Spring is finally in full swing! That means it’s the ideal time to grab some Rias Baixas Albariño and toast with friends and family virtually, of course – at least for now.

While we’ve been sheltering in place, we’ve also been connecting with wine enthusiasts all over the globe to share a glass of wine through inspiring meetups. Our latest issue covers that and much more with:

  • An update from the region regarding the COVID-19 crisis
  • A recap of our first-ever virtual happy hour
  • 4 snacks to pair with Rias Baixas Albariño
  • The Ultimate Rías Baixas Albariño Quiz
  • Social highlights
  • Rías Baixas in the news

News from the region

Although all around us it may seem the world has stopped, nature hasn’t. With bud break season upon us, work in the vineyards continues – albeit with new protocols for safety. The awakening of our vineyards gives us hope that by the time harvest 2020 arrives, we will have fully resumed our work and activities as usual.
Despite some unprecedented changes, our 2019 vintage has begun to reach shelves and tables around the world. The region reports that the 2019 harvest yield was 16% lower than 2018, and that the grapes were in excellent condition. In fact, at the February 2020 Mundus Vini Awards, the  2019 vintage wines were awarded 6 gold and 5 silver medals. They also received 2 silver Vinalies International medals. We look forward to hearing what you think about the 2019 vintage once you try it!

Happy Hour Highlights

On April 1st, we held our first-ever virtual Rias Baixas happy hour, led by two of our Voices of Albariño – Spanish Wine Scholar Kat Thomas and Rick Fisher, Spanish Wine Scholar Education Director.
Kat and Rick spent five days in the region in 2018 and were able to share personal anecdotes as they introduced the participants to the subregions and explained how the different terroirs of each result in a variety of Albariño styles. You can access the recording here to learn more.
We are grateful for being able to remain connected with you during these social distancing times. Please continue sharing with us your Rías Baixas Albariño adventures and at-home experiences @riasbaixaswines on Instagram and Twitter.
