Rias Baixas was proud to be a Premier Cru sponsor of the 2020 Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival. While the Grand Tasting could not take place this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, Rias Baixas hosted a seminar and an exclusive pairing dinner. On Friday September 18th, fifty guests gathered on the terrace of the majestic Rosecliff mansion overlooking the ocean. Led by Master Sommelier and Boston native, Michael Meagher,  the seminar provided an overview of the region and what makes the Albariño wines of Rías Baixas so unique. Attendees tasted through eight different Albariño wines and gained an understanding of the variety of flavor profiles of the wines being produced in this region.

On Saturday evening, six Rias Baixas wines were featured as pairings for a six-course dinner at the Midtown Oyster Bar. Forty dinner guests enjoyed the wines paired with an all-seafood New England dinner prepared by celebrity chef Kev des Chenes. Dishes included lobster and roasted corn fritters, seared scallops and East Coast halibut.

“When we were planning the festival this year, I was personally excited that we were collaborating on such a unique seminar and dinner,” commented Matthew MacCartney, Wine Director for Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival.  “I have been studying wine and have been in the business for almost thirty years and I have never had the opportunity to taste eight Albariño wines from varying regions side by side, not to mention taste them weaved into a tasting menu. I was overjoyed and proud to see that our festival attendees, who are largely everyday wine consumers, were equally excited at the opportunity to take this Rias Baixas journey. Tickets for both the seminar and dinner sold out within 48 hours. What a great surprise.”
